TRANSFORMING

Reflection 11/30

Before, I give my reflection of the day. I just wanna say, thank you for this class for making me understand the dynamics of cultures around us. The most important thing I learned in this class, is proclaiming Christ in the midst of troubled identity of the society. They are troubled, because many people in our community today are living in a complex society unconsciously being succumbed by the culture they embraced. Their way of life is their culture, in which without transforming them through the power of Jesus Christ, our lives will be meaningless.

Today we discussed the use of power of technology, like the internet, in hooking up with people globally.  Though we’re all not yet fully appreciative the wonders of network it provides today in every indivdual, but at least we know now that this is being discussed.

However, in church perspective social interactions is much better, rather than we are virtually communicating with each other. Church should always be the center of life of the community. It doesn;t necessarily a building but a place where we can share our space.

THE SOCIAL MOVEMENTS READER

My initial reaction when I started to read this book was, “how does it relate to our class?” So, I went on and finally I understand the importance of knowing the reasons why social organization emerged. I think we can either get them as model, or we can learn from their lessons as well. Because putting up an organization is not an easy task. Most especially here in the United States, we’re all people are busy with their own lives. The monthly bills is the most important thing to squared away, before we delve ourselves into extra curricular activities. But with all my curiosity, why do people join such an organization considering that there’s much more important thing in life that we need to take care of. There must be a compelling reason why do people lure to such activities.

“Mass society” theorist, for instance argued that social movements occured when a society had lost other, “intermediary” organizations that disconnected individuals could join (Kornhauser, 1959). This is one of the reason why people gather together because they have found connections and many other networking groups who advocates the same predicament as you do. Those people who are loosely attached to other people are the most likely the number 1 recruit of an organization. Because basically in here they receive recognition and friendship.

Regular organizations perceived to be stable and healthy unlike social movements it has different motivations. Other theorists emphasized the kind of people they thought likely to join movements, which would form when enough people were “alienated” from the world around them, or had infantile psychological needs that absorption in a movement might satisfy (Hoffer, 1951). Like, what Rhoda Blumberg discussion on Civil Right Movement, she said ” the poor are not always the most rebelious people in a society, nor do people always protest during the worst of times. Rather, people typically become angry and feel that their situation is unjust when there is a significant difference between the conditions of their lives and their expectations.” The poor although a marginalized sector of the society more often neglected by elitists but they group together as a movement to empower themselves because of the oppressive society due to the limited opportunity they have. It is important to advance their cause because if they do not form a movement they will be disregarded all the time. The African-American civil rights movement, has succesfully gained their end by showing to the whole world that the color of the skin is not too important but every human being has dignity, whether his black, white, latino or asians we’re all equal, we have dignity that needs to be respected. Time is changing, people’s perspective also change for better world. As the years went by, we learn more about our mistakes, and those mistakes should not happen again. We need to look at our neighbors how are they’re doing. If there’s a reason to advocate their cause why don’t we share to their predicaments. Its Christ emphasis to every Christian to “love they neighbor as your self” so we can live harmoniously.

Besides knowing the urge of the people why they join movements it is also important to know through this book the people who joins the movement. This is the reason why this book is very useful for me, because I am currently establishing a congregation. In fact, I just opened our first worship service last Sunday, and it was an awesome experience to start a new church for the glory of God. And one of the things that resonated with me is when the book discussed about putting up the issues upfront so that we can frame them whether the people will be interested to join or not. To be honest, it is definitely a hard task to find one convert from another denomination than the one who have already the same belief as you to join the fellowship. It is very easy to talk with them because you have already connections. And this is what this book is also talking about, especially when we discussed about recruitment. When we recruit people it is important to highlight what your group believe in, it must be presented, because you don’t want to put the people in limbo of where they getting themselves into. It is impportant to understand right away the agendas, so the people would know whether they fitted in such fellowship or organization.

Now lets talk about how movements survive? How does the middle- class social base supports their ideal and aspirations? How far can they go as far as their monetary support is concern? It is necessary to discuss this matter because an engine will not work if it has no gasoline. This book realizes the importance of our monetary support in advancing the movement’s issues. We need to challenge those well to do members of your movement to help you support manoetarily. Since you shared the same agenda or convictions it is not hard for someone to give something in the monetary level in the name of your organization. So, without financial support coming from different individuals it will be difficult for the movement or even an organization can stand.

I think the gist of this book is to understand the logic of why people join a movement, who joins it? and the most important thing is to know how this organization or movement will survive. How far they can go with their ideals and aspirations? What does it takes? I have given much opinion as I could I believe in cognizant with this book and talking with the book as much as possible is the key to understand the whole concept of The Social Movement Reader.

Reflection Thurs./Nov. 9

We just have to attend to auditorium a symposium conducted by Intercultural Studies. I was really moved by the testimoies given by Jose who was discipled by Jude who is the speaker on missioning in the outskirt of LA. Jose is a Guatemalan immigrant who arrived 15 years ago in the US. When they arrived here, he didn’t experienced a good life. He’s father was a drunkard and never taught them good values he end up in gangs. He’s transformation came when he met Jude and his wife. He accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his Lord and personal saviour and suddenly his perspective in life changes. His life that was no tomorrow before suddenly changed to a life that was full of hope.

Indeed, there’s so much missionary work we have to do in the US. we really don’t have to go to third world countries in order to find our mission, US is a mission field. I like what Julie Gorman has said, that we need each other. We need to belong. The sense of belongingness is important as we revolve around the system. because it will keep us from depression and loneliness that this country is having. Jude said, it is more harder to “fill the issues of the heart than our stomach.” We need to be sensitive with what’s happening around us. We got to get involve in the world around us. The church should be involve in the community for the proclamation of the Kingdom here on earth. Our mission is to look for each other and love each other so that we can create a better place to live in.

Reflection/Nov.7-Tuesday

Jesus is our model. If we don’t have any model, then we just depend on our intuition. It negate our witness as Christian to the world if we don’t put him as the center of our faith. What Jesus has done is not to oppose the existing structure but he went around it then he made changes. I think what Jesus has done was to show to the world that indeed He can live with us and create changes without condemnation. Christ is indeed the first missionary. Because a missionary is the one who can understand the human condition (the sinful nature of man) with the heart of compassion not condemnation.

I really like what has been discussed on Jesus’ practices because I’m doing an outreach ministry right now at Bellflower. Jesus indeed is my model in making disciples of all nations. I consider Him, as the first missionary in the world because He had shown the example of how a missionary should do when someone is out in the field. A lot of things that have been discussed by prof. Bolgers of why we should make Jesus as our model, but one thing is striking me here on this topic. And it is a missionary should have a heart of compassion. Just like what Jesus did, He self-actualized what He preaches. The problem in Christianity today is that, we are lacking as witness to the world. Sometimes we are not being identified to the powerful teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ. If indeed we are Christians we should be Christians by our love, and that is the mark of a true Christian. our love signifies the meaning of Christianity, not only to Christians, but most especially to people with a different faith background. The Lord said, we should love our neighbors as we love ourselves. I believe every Christians has a task, and that is to bring people to Christ, and bringing to Christ is not an easy tasks. But if we live by what Christ has told us to do, and that is to love our neighbors as our selves then we can have a better world to live in. Just like St. Aquinas that we should be an instrument of peace. In our world today that are so restless, and full of hatred, we can only achieve peace if we have love in our hearts. And Christ has shown it to us by giving His life to us even though that we are not worthy of.

CULTURE JAM

It is a terrible scenario to see people who worship the the things of this world. People are so caught up with brand names and fashion, lifestyles that this world is offering. While reading this book, I was reminded by the passage of Paul, when he was warning the Corinthians about their love of this world. Paul said, “do not conform to the pattern of this world.”

It is true that the world dictates on what to wear, what are we going to do with our body, and sexuality, and how we should think. All of theseinfluences are created into our minds, by the powerful media sector of our society. Gee!!! How are we gonna get out of it? Do we still have a chance? Our cravings for all of these things have gone too far. Our credit limit has exceeded to the maximum because we don’t have control anymore. The convenience of paying all of this stuff, again, the world made it all for us, has made it much easier to crave for more, it’s “ALL YOU CAN EAT.” I don’t think we have a clear idea of what’s going on. Maybe we don’t want to know. We give ourselves up to the reassuringly strong hands of Calvin Klein and Estee Lauder and Donna Karan. We follow their lead. We let them seduce us and possess us, and from our relationship with them we derive a certain sense of security, the way prostitutes derive a sense of security from their pimps.

This becomes the implicit contract: “You work for me and I will guard your place in the social hierarchy. I will protect your turf. Without me, you know you would not feel safe going out. I ensure that you are not hurt there, and for that you owe me. For me you will try harder, you will look your best; no matter how weak you feel, how broken, you will keep going out there each day because you know that only I can give you the fix you need.”

To a large extent, out there in the social world, we find that the beauty industry has engineered our concept of what a good relationship are all about. It has reinforced a rather odd way of keeping our insecurities in check.

But who do we put our trust? Are these things around us can truly give us security, or we’ll just lead us to destruction? I do understand that we all need to be secured with our lives, I think it’s all but normal mentality. I don’t see anything wrong with that. But it is more than of this world to satisfy us. People need the Lord. Our security is in the Lord. In the cartoon movie The Lion King, I was reminded of that movie of their soundtrack the “Cirlce of Life” sung by mr. Elton John. We us created human beings, was born in this world naked and we will all passed away in this world and go out as well naked. We can not take all these things. What does the Lord said about parable of the rich man, who filled he’s room with grains, and said to himself that his secured already. But the Lord said, “your foolish, tonight you will die.” God has set our priorities in life, and it is all written in the Bible. When Paul said not to conform to the pattern of this, he meant not to lure ourselves with the world. Christianity has a lot of things to talked about being thrifty and practicality of life. If we focus on word of God, then we will have a better foundation. In fact a very strong foundation.

REFLECTION Tues./Oct. 31

Today, we were group into 5-7 persons to discuss about Jesus practices. We talked about how these practices affecting our very own world (the present we are in). What it would be like Jesus’ practices in the church, community, and even in our own family. We learned from Jesus’ practices that, he turned the world upside down. He had shamed the wise, Jesus lived amongst us, stepped down from His throne as the only Son of God, and lived like an ordinary human being. How challenging to us to follow Jesus’ footsteps. I don’t think none of us had thought the a reigning God will humbly give Himself up to us who are not even worthy of His sacrifces. And yet, most of the people in this world didn’t even appreciate. They ignored Jesus I don’t know for disbelief maybe, or perhaps they just don’t wanna know. Our self-centered mindset had led us to astray. Many of us, didn’t know that what God had offered to the world to His son Jesus Christ is a gift. We don’t have to work for it, we just need to believe and accept it.

I think if the world we’ll only look into what Jesus had done for us, as God and as a human being peace and love will reign in this earth. What Jesus Christ have done for us, was He taught us how to live life. That, our life is not only all about ourselves but to sacrifice as well for others. If we we live by the rules we can’t get it, but if we live in Christ we can know the meaning of life in all aspects.

REFLECTION Thursday Oct. 26

Today we discussed the last Jesus Christ mission. He knew the rabbinic culture very well, he never go against it, but he went around it in order to reach out the people of Israel. A very religious Jew, Christ has used the advantage of knowing his stuff to make him understandable to his contemporaries. He uses meal to create a space for one another to get along with each other. The rich people got to share to everyone of what he or she have to share one meal together. This event transpired into a community of believers of Jesus Christ which eventually became his followers.

Also, Christ had redefine family, not necessarily blood relation.  He made all the people to become one family under God. This is a huge transformation, because he is going against already to the social structure. This is an alternative family, I think when Jesus did it, He’s not only speaking directly to the people of his time but it transcends to all generations. Well of course, all of Jesus teachings is transcendant to all generations.

REFLECTION Tuesday 10/24/2006

Today is the continuation of Jesus Christ as prophet. He had shown to the world by flipping upside down the system that turns this world down. Christ as a hailed “King” didn’t exercise His power to serve himself but rather He went out of the throne to live among us, and become our redeemer. Christ, had made many symbolic resistence to power like table fellowship in order to gather the power of the commons to raise the interest of all people. Jesus exercise more on symbolic resistence rather than hidden transcript, everyday grumbling, and public lobby because this is the most effective tools in reaching out to the world. He organized a manpower mechanism within the powerless (the disciples) so that it will be eaier for the people to connect with what they’re preaching. There’s such a huge gap between the people and authority at that time, and what Christ had in mind is not to subdue the powerless to tremble against the political authorities, which He can probably do, as much eaiser route to proclaim gospel. However, what Christ would want is our heart to submit with awe and reverance to God on their free will.

FENCES AND WINDOWS

Fences and Windows exposed to the minds of the people’s awareness about the evils of globalization. I could understand the beauty of the presentation of their projects and programs for the poor countries, however, unmasking the true identity of free-trade market globalization its dubious. We are not only talking about the money that were being collected from the poor country like Argentina and Mexico, but their dignity as well, as a free country. IMF (International Monetary Fund) is controlling the internal affairs of the government, to the extent that Mexico government has loosed its tract to give basic services. For example, instead of creating more jobs and increased resources for them, many more had losed their jobs and become poorer. That’s why many country from Latin America, when NAFTA tried to hold the trade ministers meeting, they were being greeted by a large crowd of protesters, even larger than the one in Seattle in 1999. If you would asked why, because they saw already the bad effect to Mexico, so why they will even try to formulate in their countries.

But who truly benefits from globalization? Is it really the poor countries or these giant corporations? Are they’re really there to develop such countries or rape even more their economy because they like the cheap labor. This is one of the biggest question right now? The poor becomes poorer while the rich is getting richer. It seems that the world is unfair, these international corporation are giving only a pack of meat to the hungry wolves. The idea of globalization or free trade market is to altogether uplift the lives of every human race on earth, not to undermine even more the dignity of the poor people.

I am pro-poor, when I was in the Philippines, I was involved in different Urban Poor organizations that fight for the right of the small and maltreated workers. I saw the unfair treatment to the society, how these elite of the society think only of themselves, and forget about the lives of their people. We have filed numerous cases against them but it seems justice is only for the rich not for the poor. Thousands of “unfair labor practices” have been filed through the Department of Labor, five years had past they’re still waiting for the promulgation of the case. Our opponent we’re huge business magnate from the Philippines and a biggest political contributor to one of our politicians at that time. I am no longer involved with that organization because I have a different mission now, I have no more communication with them because my family and ministry are now my focus.

Looking back during my college years in the Philippines, I am a Political Science major, and a lot of my classmates were members of student activist movement.  They tried to recruit me, but I refused because my priority is to finish my studies. But along the way, I have exchange debates with them regarding social issues. And one of the issues we have then, is whether the Philippines should sign in the World Trade Organization. This means that our country will join to the competition of the world their their trade. My stand then, is that we should open our industry not only to the United States but to the rest of the world. It is also one way of improving our qualities of work in order to come up to the world standards, therefore, it will create more jobs in order to improve the lives of many Filipinos. However, It was almost 12 years had past since we signed the World Trade Organization, and the lives of our people remains the same. We double-up our loan from IMF became more higher than the 2o year administration of Pres. Marcos. After 12 years, we double up the amount of what we owe to the World bank. Which means the 3/4 of Philippines national budget will only to our national debt. And, we they wanna make sure that our programs and projects were aligned to the dictate of the IMF and World Bank.

Where are we going from here? May God bless the Philippines.

Tuesday Reflection week 4

The chunk of our discussion focuses on the emerging churches. How they become big, and caused the mainline denomination to drop. A lot emerging church planters has really went down to the grassroots level and understanding the dynamics of a certain community is truly important. Another secret of success which I believe it shouldn’t be is the fact that Jesus Christ is the central or focus of their activity. I always believe that, as a church planter myself, it doesn’t make sense to build a church if we don’t know the very essence of why we’re doing such, and that is to proclaim Jesus Christ, and reconcile the people to God through Christ. I’m learning a lot of perspective here in this class as far as understanding the culture is concern. As church planter I am confronted by lots of different people of their respective ethnicity. In my interview with them, and personal conversation, someone needs to be sensitive what’s going on. You need to be attentive to where is he or she is coming from, otherwise you will miss the point or the opportunity to relate to him or her. Someone has really that has special gift in order to have that patience and broadness of the mind in order to connect to other people.
